Passat models were completely redesigned in 2006, with more power across the line. The engine for the base and 2.0T models is a 200-horsepower, turbocharged, direct-injected 2.0L four-cylinder. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, with a six-speed automatic available. With the manual, the Passat can dash to 60 mph in only 6.9 seconds and has EPA fuel economy ratings of 23 city, 32 highway. 3.6L models come with a 280-horsepower, 3.6L narrow-angle V6 engine and a six-speed automatic and are capable of hitting 60 mph in only 6.6 seconds. The Passat has an electromechanical power steering system that can compensate for crosswinds, while its standard anti-lock brakes with brake assist, have an automatic brake-wiping feature to help keep brakes performing at their best in rain or snow. The Passat also has an electronic push-button-activated parking brake which, on manual-transmission models, comes with a "hill-hold" feature. Automatic models come with steering-wheel paddle shifters for sporty driving. Stability control and an electronic differential locking system are standard on all models, while a 4Motion all-wheel drive system is available on 3.6L models. All Passats also have a folding rear seatback with ski pass-through. There are several storage trays built into the instrument panel, and an umbrella holder in the driver's door. Wagon models have a large, open 21.3-cubic-foot cargo area that can increase to 61.1 cubic feet with the seats folded forward. The base model comes with popular equipment like air conditioning, keyless entry, a trip computer, and power windows, locks, and mirrors. The 2.0T adds alloy wheels, a power driver's seat, and a split-folding back seat. The 3.6L includes 17-inch styled alloys, a sunroof, and a six-disc CD changer. There's also a Wolfsburg Edition sedan that brings most of the 3.6L standard equipment to the 2.0T. Other options include a high-end, Danish-built Dynaudio sound system with eight speakers and six-disc in-dash changer, or a DVD-based navigation system. Larger, 18-inch alloy wheels, rear and side sunshades, or real walnut wood dash trim are also optional. A Sport Leather Package brings leather seats, power-adjustable front seats with memory, and a multi-function steering wheel with Tiptronic controls. LED taillights are standard on the Passat, while bi-xenon headlamps are available, along with an adaptive front lighting system that can swivel the headlamps into a turn up to 15 degrees. It's supplemented by a cornering light that illuminated up to 35 degrees to the side. Six air bags are standard on the Passat, including side-impact front-seat air bags and side-curtain air bags for front and rear outboard occupants. Rear-seat side air bags are optional.
